Entitled Fuel for Life: Energy Justice for the Developing World, the event featured leading innovators and entrepreneurs working to address urban and indoor air pollution in the developing world through improved transportation and cooking technologies.

Speakers for this event included Dr. Bryan Willson, Mr. Paul Hudnut, and Dr. Lakshman Guruswamy.
Dr. Willson is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU) and founder of the CSU Engines & Energy Conversion Laboratory. He is also the founder and co-founder of numerous sustainable energy companies and non-profits, including Envirofit International and Solix Biofuels. Envirofit recently received a five-year, $25 million grant from the Shell Foundation to reduce global deaths caused by indoor air pollution through clean-burning cook stoves. Envirofit was also recently recognized by the Stanford Social Innovation Review for its groundbreaking approach for commercializing environmentally friendly technologies in the developing world.
Mr. Hudnut is Founder of the Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise Program at CSU and teaches entrepreneurship at the College of Business. He is also co-founder of Envirofit International and co-director of CSU’s Global Innovation Center for Energy, Health & the Environment. Together, Dr. Willson and Mr. Hudnut are pioneering the design of retrofits that dramatically reduce the pollution caused by millions of two-stroke engine vehicles, such as “tuk-tuks” (three-wheelers and auto rickshaws), motorcycles and other vehicles used in Asian countries. The engines used in these vehicles emit extremely high levels of particulates that annually result in thousands of deaths, many more thousands of cases of respiratory illness, and other social and environmental ills in Asian cities. Willson and Hudnut have designed a retrofit that will cut two-stroke pollution by 90% using a clean, fuel-efficient direct injection technology.
Dr. Lakshman Guruswamy, a native of Sri Lanka, is the Director of CEES and the Nicholas Doman Professor of International Environmental Law at the University of Colorado Law School. He is a world-recognized expert on the issue of energy poverty and sustainable development.
